Thyroid Management

Thyroid troubles happen when not enough hormones are made by the thyroid gland. This can be because of problems with the gland’s design or how it works, leading to fewer hormones being released. In Ayurveda, they don’t look at the thyroid as a single problem but as a set of symptoms. When pitta dosha goes up, it can lead to a lazy thyroid.

On the flip side, if Vata dosha is out of balance due to Agni Dusti (digestive fire upset) and stress, it might cause thyroid troubles too. When doshas don’t balance, you might gain weight, feel heavy, or get cold signs of Kapha imbalance. So basically, a combination of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha imbalances can lead to thyroid complications. The thyroid gland is important as it is a crucial and delicate organ in our endocrine system.

Types of Thyroid Issues:

Thyroid issues include a variety of problems. These are commonly Hyperthyroidism, Hypothyroidism, and two types of Thyroiditis, one of which is Hashimoto’s. Each shows different traits and signs, highlighting our thyroid’s complexity.

  • Hyperthyroidism: Hyperthyroidism happens when the thyroid makes too many hormones. This causes symptoms like losing weight quickly, a fast heartbeat, feeling nervous, shaky hands, sweating, and a swollen thyroid gland.
  • Hypothyroidism: On the other hand, Hypothyroidism happens when the thyroid doesn’t make enough hormones. This causes different symptoms like gaining weight, thin hair, constant tiredness, a puffy face, a deep voice, feeling sad, and difficulty remembering things.
  • Thyroiditis: It’s as if the thyroid gland catches a cold. It gets inflamed, and this messes up its normal workings. The gland can then make either too much or too little thyroid hormone. This upsets the delicate balance of these hormones, causing different symptoms.
  • Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis: Now, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis is a friendly-fire issue. It’s where your body’s defences mistake its thyroid gland for an intruder. This leads to long-term inflammation, and eventually, the thyroid may struggle to make enough hormones. Hashimoto’s doesn’t just affect the thyroid, though — a bigger system, known as the endocrine system, also feels the impact.

Ayurveda, the ancient system of traditional medicine, approaches the management and prevention of thyroid diseases holistically. It employs a combination of external therapies, therapeutic interventions, dietary recommendations, and exercise regimens to restore balance to the body’s vital energies (doshas) and promote overall thyroid health.
